Frequently asked questions
How do I mark paintings I've seen?
Seen has four tabs: Discover, Museums, Journey and Profile. On the Museums tab, tap Near me to find your current museum, or browse the list directly. Open a museum to see its painting list and mark the paintings you saw. Your visits are kept on the Journey tab.
Where is my data stored?
All your data — paintings you've marked as seen or favorited, your visit history — is stored locally on your iPhone. Nothing in the app is sent to a server that we run; the painting images and maps come from third parties, which the privacy policy lists. If you delete the app, all data is removed.
Will my data sync across devices?
Seen has no sync of its own, so your data lives on the device you installed it on. It is included in your iPhone's iCloud Backup if you have iCloud Backup turned on, so it comes back when you restore a new iPhone from that backup.
How do I share my stats?
Use the Share button on the Profile or Journey tab, or on a visit. The card is rendered on your iPhone. Send it with the system share sheet, or tap Save Image to add it to Photos (iOS asks for add-only permission).
Why are some paintings missing from a museum?
The catalog includes 29,000+ canonical works from major museums, with metadata from Wikidata and images from Wikimedia Commons, the Met, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian. Not every painting in every museum is included — the bundled catalog focuses on works that are publicly notable enough to have rich metadata.
Why doesn't the app find my museum nearby?
Either:
- iOS location permission was denied. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Seen and set to While Using App.
- Your museum is not in the catalog of 700+ institutions. Write to us with the museum's name.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app from your iPhone. This removes all sightings, visits, favorites, and preferences. There is no separate “wipe data” button; Seen has no account or server, so there is nothing of yours to delete anywhere else. Copies in an iCloud Backup are managed in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups. You can also delete a single visit from its detail screen.
Do I need an account?
No. Seen has no accounts, no sign-up, no login.
What is Seen Pro, and how do I restore it?
Seen Pro, a one-time purchase with no subscription, adds Insights (your collection by century, movement, artist and place), every medal beyond your Passport stamps and visas, unlimited favorites and the Poster and Album share styles; everything else stays free. To get it back on a new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account and tap Restore Purchases on the Seen Pro screen, or in Settings (the gear on the Profile tab). Billing questions for App Store purchases go to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Does Seen show ads?
No. Seen has no advertising, no third-party SDKs, and no analytics.
